Number lines

Choose where the line starts, its step and how many steps it has, then add markers and drag them. The worksheet and the board get the same line.

The line

Add up to five markers. Drag a marker to another tick, or select it below and use the arrow keys; Delete removes it.

    Find the number

Six lines with only the two ends written. Type the number at the marker, in either set of digits. A wrong answer is explained by counting the steps.

    Use it in class

The worksheet and the board get exactly what is set now. You can edit the worksheet before printing, and its answer key comes on a separate page. On the board everything stays editable, and nothing is added to a live lesson.

    How to use it

    1. Choose the start, the step and the number of steps; the end is worked out for you.
    2. Choose which numbers are written on the line, then add markers and move them to the numbers you are discussing.
    3. For class: make an editable worksheet, with its answer key on a separate page, or put the line on the board, where the markers can still be moved.

    Worked examples

    Counting in fives

    A line from 0 in steps of 5 has ticks at 0, 5, 10, 15… A marker on the fourth tick after 0 is at 4 × 5 = 20.

    Decimals between 1 and 2

A line from 1 in steps of 0.1 has ten steps up to 2. The tick halfway along is 1.5: five tenths after 1.

    Quick reference

    • Two neighbouring ticks are always one step apart.
    • The number at a tick = the start + the number of steps × the step.
    • Along the line the numbers increase from left to right; numbers before zero are negative.

You can type with either set of digits. The digit choice only changes how this tool shows numbers, and it is kept on this device. An operation written with ٠–٩ reads from right to left; one written with 0–9, from left to right.

Number lines here are standard school arithmetic. The page computes every tick exactly, in tenths where needed, so decimals such as 0.1 + 0.2 do not drift.
