Laboratory equipment

Each piece with its name and its use. Hide the names to quiz the class, then put the pieces on a sheet or the board.

Laboratory equipment

Show
For the sheet and the board
  • Beaker

Holds, mixes and warms liquids; its marks give only a rough volume.

  • Conical flask

Holds liquids that are swirled or heated; its narrow neck keeps splashes in.

  • Test tube

Holds small amounts of substances for a reaction or for heating.

  • Test-tube rack

Holds test tubes upright and keeps them apart.

  • Measuring cylinder

Measures the volume of a liquid more precisely than a beaker.

  • Funnel

Pours a liquid into a narrow opening, or holds a filter paper for filtering.

  • Bunsen burner

Gives a gas flame for heating; its air hole changes the flame.

  • Dropper

Adds a liquid drop by drop.

  • Thermometer

    Measures temperature.

  • Spatula

Takes small amounts of a solid out of its container.

Name the equipment

A drawing appears; choose its name. A wrong choice is explained by what each piece is used for.

Use it in class

The sheet and the board get the equipment chosen above. On the board each piece can be moved and resized, and its label edited.

How to use it

  1. Choose the equipment you are teaching; tick More equipment for the less common pieces.
  2. Untick Names to show numbers instead, and ask the class to name each piece and say what it is for.
  3. For class: print a sheet to label, with its key on a separate page, or put the pieces on the board, where they stay movable and their labels editable.

These drawings are for naming equipment and its use, not instructions for an experiment. In the laboratory, follow your school's safety rules.

Tripod · further equipment
Holds a container above a burner, usually on a gauze.
Wire gauze · further equipment
Spreads the heat of the flame under a beaker or flask on a tripod.
Dropper
Adds a liquid drop by drop.
Thermometer
Measures temperature.
Spatula
Takes small amounts of a solid out of its container.
