In short
- No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. Hurayrah has no server of its own and sends nothing about you to Bayyinli.
- What you tell Hurayrah stays in Chrome on your computer. A few features you choose use the internet; they are listed below.
What Hurayrah keeps, and where
Everything is kept in Chrome's storage for the extension on this computer (chrome.storage.local, plus the extension's own IndexedDB for audio). It is not synced to other devices by Hurayrah.
- The name or nickname you give it, and your settings (visits, topics, quiet hours, sounds, dhikr goal and pace).
- Your check-ins: moods, intentions, small wins and your dhikr counts per day, plus the dhikr you are in the middle of (for up to six hours).
- Your notes to yourself, your favourite messages, and which messages it has shown recently.
- Your recordings for dhikr, audio files you add, and audio links you add (in the extension's IndexedDB).
What uses the internet
- The search box on the new tab passes what you type to Chrome's search, which sends it to your default search engine, as Chrome's own address bar would.
- An audio link you add (Dhikr → Your voice → From the internet) is downloaded from that website once. If the website does not allow it, the clip is played from the link each time instead. Credentials and cookies are not sent with the download.
- Computer voices: every dhikr has a built-in recorded recitation, so normally nothing is needed. If you remove a recitation and have no recording, Hurayrah asks Chrome to speak the dhikr with an Arabic voice. It prefers a voice installed on your computer. If the only Arabic voice is an online one (Chrome offers some), Chrome may send the words of the dhikr to that voice's provider to be spoken.
- Opening links to bayyinli.com from Hurayrah's settings or popup visits this website, under its own privacy page.
Nothing else is fetched: Hurayrah's pictures, sounds, fonts and recitations are inside the extension.
Permissions, and what they are used for
- New tab: Hurayrah replaces the page Chrome shows on a new tab with its room.
- activeTab and scripting: when you click Hurayrah's icon, press Alt+Shift+P, open its settings from the popup, or choose “Sit on this page”, Hurayrah draws itself on the page you are on. Chrome allows this only for that tab, after your action. Hurayrah does not read the page's content. While it is on a page it listens only for the Escape key, to close itself. It never runs on Chrome's own pages or on the Chrome Web Store.
- search: the search box described above.
- storage, alarms, idle: to keep your data, to time visits and reminders, and to wait while you are away from the computer.
- offscreen: to play sounds and recitations from the background.
- notifications (optional, asked only if you turn them on): reminders as Chrome notifications.
- Microphone (not a permission of the extension; Chrome asks the moment you press Record): to record your voice for dhikr. The recording stays on your computer.
Hurayrah does not ask for access to all websites (it has no host permissions).
Deleting your data
- Settings → Forget my check-ins removes your moods, intentions, wins and dhikr counts.
- Notes, favourites and each recording have their own Remove button.
- Removing the extension (
chrome://extensions→ Remove) deletes everything Hurayrah stored on that computer.
Children
Hurayrah asks only for a first name or nickname, which stays on the computer. It is not designed to collect information from anyone.
Questions
Write to privacy@bayyinli.com. Because Hurayrah keeps nothing on a server, Bayyinli holds no data from the extension to show or delete; everything is on your computer and under your control.
Changes
If a new version changes how Hurayrah handles data, this page will be updated first. The date of the last change is shown at the top.
